Oily + Problem Skin
Oily skin is a problem for millions of men, women, and young people worldwide. It is difficult to control because it is the result of genetically determined hormonal changes in your body, and you simply cannot control hormones topically. The hormones responsible for oily skin are called androgens and they are present in both men and women.
Healthy oil production is beneficial for your skin. It becomes a problem when too much oil is produced. An excess of oil production leads to larger pores and a thickening of the pore lining that can result in blackheads and pimples.
Not all oily skin becomes acneic skin, however the two are often present together. Acne, called acne vulgaris, is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. Typical features of acne include:
- seborrhea (increased oil secretion)
- microcomedones
- comedones
- papules
- pustules
- nodules (large papules)
- scarring
- inflammation
The appearance of acne varies with skin colour. Approximately 80% of acne cases are thought to be hereditary.
Caring for Oily or Problem Skin
The first step is a gentle cleanser without sulfates. NeoGenesis Cleanser is good for all skin types and all skin conditions, leaving the skin clean and nourished without stripping the skin. Many with oily skin incorrectly believe that their skin is dirty and wash too often with harsh cleansers and exfoliants. This will damage the skin’s barrier and cause it to produce even more oil.
After Cleanser, NeoGenesis Recovery, abundant in S²RM® technology, is perfect to naturally restore balance within the skin and may help post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). PIH is the red and brown marks that remain from acne lesions and can be present on the skin for many months after the pimple is gone. NeoGenesis Recovery serum used twice per day will reduce the chances that scarring will occur.
After applying Recovery, incorporate one of our two acids, either Mandelic Acid 8% or Salicylic Acid Gel. We suggest introducing one of these at a time, and to be used once a day for the first 2 weeks. Once the skin has adjusted and if needed, you may use up to twice a day. If choosing to use Mandelic Acid 8%, you can also use Salicylic Acid Gel to spot-treat the area of the pustules and comedones.
People who have oily skin often steer clear of moisturizers, worrying that they’ll make their skin worse. Oily skin doesn’t need oil, however, it does need hydration. Hydrated skin is a must for healthy skin. Keeping it hydrated will not trigger more oil production. Aggressively treated skin often appears oily and dehydrated at the same time. This will signal the hormones to produce more oil, keeping the problem ongoing. A light application of our Light Moisturizer or Barrier Renewal Cream to help give the skin the hydration it needs. Always follow with a chemical-free sunscreen during the day.
