Pre + Post Cancer Surgery
Whether exploratory, preventative or more invasive, cancer surgery causes trauma to the skin and surrounding tissue taking weeks to heal and leaving scars that can be inconvenient or uncomfortable. Surgery wounds can take longer if you have a medical condition or are taking certain medications, such as steroids.
Prophylactic surgery is preventive surgery that is done to remove an organ or gland that shows no signs of cancer in an attempt to prevent any cancer from developing in that organ or gland. Prophylactic surgery is performed when people who know they are at high risk for developing certain cancers. One example is prophylactic mastectomy where one or both breasts are removed for those who carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation. These individuals may be able to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by 95%.
Other surgeries may be diagnostic, which is performed in order to attain a biopsy. Invasive surgeries are more invasive and are used to remove cancerous tissue.
Cancer Surgery Skin Care
For both pre and post-cancer surgery, NeoGenesis S²RM® products provide a natural approach to healing called “systems therapeutics”. Injured or damaged tissue need the molecules that were present when the tissue was healthy to be returned to the skin. Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, Urea and Collagen make up the skin, and are just some of the molecules involved in this process. They are also responsible for healing and maintaining the new healthy tissue. Providing the proper atmosphere to heal the wounded area quickly will minimize the chances of scarring or other unwanted side effects.
Our products strengthen the skin prior to surgery and calm and soothe skin irritation post-surgery. Before any surgery, it is important to prepare the skin for the procedure. Gently cleanse the area with the NeoGenesis Cleanser, followed by Recovery. Finish with Intensive Moisturizer or Barrier Renewal Cream to hydrate and support the skin’s barrier.
Keep the skin in a hydrated state after any surgery for optimal healing. Use the Moisturizing Mist and Barrier Renewal Cream or Intensive Moisturizer throughout the day to optimize healing.
